As some of you may or may not know, for the past two years I’ve been working on my first feature documentary film (this is always the go to excuse for my lack of consistency in posting here at The Documentary Blog). The project is titled Beauty Day and it chronicles the life and times of Ralph Zavadil, aka Cap’n Video. His cable access show (The Cap’n Video Show) was filmed in my home town (St.Catharines, Ontario) and spawned a small but loyal cult following. His show consisted of a series of gross-out skits (snorting eggs, eating cat food) and dangerous stunts (sliding off his roof, jumping off of telephone poles) that challenged the sensibilities of its conservative community cable audience. It’s only upon reflection (and the advent of the internet) that you realize this goofy show was truly ahead of its time. Ralph was doing his wild stunts years before Tom Green or Jackass hit MTV.

After a serious on-camera accident and a controversial Easter episode, the Cap’n was pulled from the airwaves and eventually faded away into community cable obscurity. Now, fifteen years later, Ralph has decided to revisit the Cap’n in celebration of the 20th birthday of the creation of the character. With the help of his best friend Robert, he’ll attempt to get back on the air one last time and give the Cap’n the send off he deserves. In the process, we revisit all of the ups and downs in Ralph’s life and learn that those who are truly passionate about their art always manage to find an outlet and surround themselves with like minded, creative people.

I’m excited to finally reveal some footage for our readers here at The Documentary Blog. I cut this trailer together to give you all an idea of what the film is and hopefully convince a bunch of you to help support us along the way. If you like what you see and happen to live in the New York City area, you’re in luck! Beauty Day will have its world premiere on Sunday, March 20th at the Museum of Modern Art as part of their Canadian Front screening series. Here are the details:

Sunday, March 20, 2011, 5:30 p.m., Theater 1, T1

Monday, March 21, 2011, 4:00 p.m., Theater 3, mezzanine, Education and Research Building

For our Canadian readers, Beauty Day will have a limited theatrical release this spring via Ron Mann’s filmswelike and will broadcast on The Movie Network and Movie Central later this year, so stay tuned for more details on that. You can also visit the Beauty Day website for more news and info on more screenings to come. Until then, check out the trailer above and be sure to spread the magic of Cap’n Video around the inter-webs!

For those who aren’t aware, every month or so I take part in a podcast called The Movie Club Podcast, in which I sit down with a bunch of other movie bloggers and engage in an in-depth conversation about two (or in this case three) pre-selected films. This month’s episode has just been posted and I figured I’d share it over here at The Documentary Blog, as it’s particularly relevant to documentary flimmaking. We sat down and dug into Orson Welles’ F for Fake, Banksy’s Oscar-nominated film Exit Through the Gift Shop, and the controversial Sundance darling, Catfish. We talk for almost three hours about truth in non-fiction filmmaking, documentary ethics, and manage to go off on a few related tangents. The line up is: Me (Jay), from The Documentary Blog and Film Junk, Sean from Film Junk, Kurt from Row Three and Twitch, James from Where the Long Tail Ends, and Marina from Row Three and Quiet Earth.

I highly recommend you click here and head over to The Movie Club Podcast website and give this episode a listen. Also, be sure to join in the conversation!

Hey guys, just thought I’d give you a little look at a project I’ve been working on off and on for a few months now. The film is a yet-to-be-titled documentary chronicling world renowned wire walker Jay Cochrane’s attempt to walk across Niagara Falls on a tight rope. It’s a much discussed topic around these parts (I live fifteen minutes away from the falls) and is turning out to be an interesting little story, especially with tourism in the falls facing some pretty harsh lows. I hope to document the entire process, from proposal to permission (hopefully) to performance.

The following is a proposal video I put together to send off to Mr.Cochrane. Thankfully he was very enthusiastic about the project and looks to be on board. So here it is for you guys to see. Still a work in progress, and cut together from only two interviews…this video is merely an example of the sort of tone/style I’ll be shooting for. Please feel free to share your thoughts. Any comments would be much appreciated. (Thanks to the wonderful services available at vimeo.com, this video is also made available in 720p HD by following THIS link!)

I’ll be the first to admit that my enthusiasm for blogging has been at an all time low as of late. I guess the more time I spend writing disposable posts on the internet, the more bad I feel about not dedicating my time to something more substantial. Well luckily I’ve had a personal project on the go for a couple of months now, and I just finished shooting an interview for it yesterday morning. I spoke with Graham Wing, founder and editor of the Access Niagara blog about his love for Niagara Falls, it’s current state of tourism, and his petition in support of wire walker Jay Cochrane’s bid to cross the falls. The interview turned out great, and we were lucky enough to shoot inside the underground killer whale viewing tanks at Marineland. Here’s two stills from the shoot:

The future of this project is still sort of up in the air, but i’m definitely having a good time doing it. It’s nice to know that i’m the only person counting on everything to fall into place, and if everything fails, I can walk away with some good experiences. Stay tuned for future updates as I force myself to get my blog on.

I was lucky enough to be offered to shoot in the large city hall chambers. The room was pretty awesome, with some interesting colour choices. There’s a great pink wall at the very back that i’d like to do a future interview in front of. The only real problem I had was a last minute issue with my microphone stand. I ended up having to balance the shotgun mic carefully on a dixie cup, which unfortunately, you can see in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. I should be able to work around it in editing, but I somehow find it oddly amusing. Maybe it will suit the tone of the final film?

I’ve started shooting some stuff here and there, gathering some scenic shots and what not, however this Friday is my first sit-down interview for the project. I’ll be talking to Niagara Falls Mayor Ted Salci about the state of tourism in the region and the falls’ recent induction into the 7 Wonders of Canada. I’ll be posting some stills from the interview, so anyone interested can check back for those. I hope to come up with a better summary of the film soon, so once I get that together i’ll be sure to post it.

Those of you who visit The Documentary Blog on a semi-regular basis may have noticed a lack of posting over the last month or so. Although there really hasn’t been too much news that’s caught my eye as of late, the major reason for my irregular updates is i’ve simply been busy over the last little while. Most recently, i’ve been spending the majority of my time editing a film for my friend John Campea over at The Movie Blog. It’s called ‘The Prince of Peace, God of War’ and takes a look at Christian pacifism versus Christian Just War Theory. It’s been a challenge to say the least, as i’d never edited this much footage based on a topic I essentially knew very little about. However, the film is now finished and I think it turned out pretty good. John’s going to be showing it to some people this Friday, and I’ll be sitting in on one of the screenings. Also, beforehand I’ll be joining him and Doug on ‘The Movie Blog Uncut Live’, so check it out.

As for myself, i’ve also been busy with my own project. I’m still building up my equipment list in preperation for shooting a feature length version of my time travel documentary, ‘Obsessed & Scientific’. I’m pretty close to being set, and hope to do a sort of test run with the camera in the near future. Possibly a short documentary on Niagara Falls, which i’ll get into a little later. I’ve also just recently purchased a ‘Steady Tracker’, which is essentially a poor mans steadicam. I’ve tried it out and it definitely gets the job done. I just don’t know how long my weak arms can hold the HVX mounted on top of that thing. I’ve also recently picked up a new ‘cool’ light, which uses three colour balanced ‘energy saver’ flourescent bulbs. Anyways, that’s about it for now. If you want to keep up with any of my personal stuff, i’m going to be posting in better detail on my new personal blog at www.jaycheel.com.

Well it’s official. I’m now a personal blogger. Just as the guilt began setting in for not updating The Documentary Blog frequently enough, I decided to start a personal blog. (And yes, the guilt of my second post on this site this week being about my personal blog is tearing me apart.) Anyways, the site will be dedicated to my growing number of personal projects, including my documentary film and the recent purchase of a brand new Panasonic HVX-200! You’ll also find some music and film recommendations, and eventually a podcast. The site is called ‘Young, Fast & Scientific’, and it’s the personal blog of myself, Jay Cheel. Check it out!

So here’s a question for all of you videographers and documentary filmmakers out there. I’ve recently made a pretty big decision in my life. I figure it’s time to be a little less passive and a little more aggressive. After saving to buy my own house, i’ve decided to scrap my life plans and throw it all on the line. I’m going to try and shoot my time travel film this year, and i’m going to use my house money to do it! TAKE THAT, RESPONSIBILITY AND SECURITY! So now that i’m officially living on ‘the edge’, i’ve been looking into purchasing a new video camera, and i’m really leaning towards the Panasonic AG-HVX200. The test footage i’ve seen looks amazing, and the HD format is something i’d be interested in trying out. However, this whole shooting to memory thing is sort of freaking me out. I believe I ready 8 GIGS for every 10 MINUTES! And the P2 memory that the camera requires is pretty expensive at this point. I could just shoot to tape, but would it be worth paying the money for this camera if I were to do so? I also enjoy the variable speeds that the camera shoots at. Finally I can do my own time lapsed ‘Gus Van Sante’ cloud shots!

Anyways, if anyone has shot with this camera or has any knowledge about any of this, could you drop me a line? I’m also trying to figure out the best way to go about purchasing one in Canada. I’d like to avoid customs/border taxes at all costs. Any advice would be appreciated. You can reach me at jcheel@sympatico.ca. Thanks in advance.

So I haven’t been posting half as much as i’d like to be in the last little while. There’s a couple of reasons for this: First off, being a blog that specifically deals with documentaries, news can be scarce. I’m not just talking about any old news story regarding documentary films…I mean the type of story that I feel an urge to actually write about. But in those tough times, I usually end up looking for interesting videos on YouTube to throw up here and start some discussion. The main reason for things slowing down is i’ve been sort of busy lately. I’ve taken on an editing job, working with John Campea from The Movie Blog on his documentary ‘The Prince of Peace, The God of War’. Also, i’ll be doing some work on some upcoming episodes of the Versus video podcast over at Film Junk. So things are getting a little tight around here, but I will still post as much as I possibly can. Thanks to everyone who checks out the site on a regular basis and stay tuned for some fun things in the future.

So i’ve been really thinking about this whole idea of going through with a feature version of my student documentary film, Obsessed & Scientific. I’ve written a rough treatment, and i’m pretty positive that it could make an interesting film. I’ve also been thinking about the logistics involved in bringing such a project to life. I’m currenty comfortable in a great job, and i’m looking to buy a house in the next year. How does someone in a position such as this expect to get a film project off of the ground without making some sacrifices? Well fortunately i’m not even close to really having to deal with any of that. I am, however, thinking about production companies. A quick search on the net has left the term ‘we do not accept unsolicited submissions’ on heavy rotation in my mind. Where the hell do I start with this thing? Is it practical to consider shooting some of this on my own dollar? Am I naive to hope to work in 16mm for this film? So many questions! I know there’s some established documentary filmmakers who read this site, so if you’ve gotten this far in the post, perhaps you could share your experiences in getting your projects made. Also, if anyone has a good online resource for documentary production companies that WILL accept treatments, hook me up!

Hey guys. So here’s a quick update on some of my personal projects. I’ve began researching a topic that i’ve sort of become obsessed with as of late. (as some readers of this blog may be aware of) Although i’m not really convinced that the majority of the 9/11 conspiracy theories hold any water, I do find the whole thing very interesting. There are people out there that have dedicated their lives to uncovering the ‘truth’ behind the September 11th terrorist attacks. Organizations such as www.911truth.org are convinced that there’s something the government isn’t telling us. While some of their claims are a bit of a stretch, they do raise some interesting questions. But i’ll tell you right now, i’m not interested in an investigative report in regards to what ‘really’ happened on 9/11. I’m simply interested in the people doing the reporting. What does it feel like to truly believe that your own government had a hand in one of the most horrible terrorist attacks in history? Just the idea of sitting down with some of these folks and picking their brains would be great. Something along the lines of the early films of Errol Morris. Think Gates of Heaven or Vernon, Florida. No investigations, no attempts at finding the truth, no news footage of the towers…simply listening to interesting people discuss unpopular theories passionately.

I do have my eye on a few possible interview subjects at the time being. Hopefully down the road i’ll be able to figure out what exactly I want to do with this and be able to start making some contacts. And then of course there’s the money. We’ll see how this one goes.
