I’m a big fan of the short work Errol Morris has been doing for the New York Times. It’s the perfect format for those smaller stories that might not be able to carry a feature length film. Now, ESPN has contracted Morris for a new short called ‘Team Spirit’, which looks at the sports-themed funerals of die hard sports fans who have passed away. I suppose it’s sort of a fitting companion piece to his first film, Gates of Heaven. Check it out above! Also, big kudos to ESPN on all of the amazing sports related documentaries they’ve been putting out over the last few years. (Thanks to Jessica on the heads up on this one!)

Creepy.

Jay, it’s interesting you say this is like a companion piece to Gates of Heaven, because the first thing I noticed was that the interviews are all done in locations other than the studio Morris usually uses. Something (and correct me if I’m wrong) Morris hasn’t done (or at least to such an extent) since his first couple of films. Almost like he returned to some of his older techniques. Anyway, nice little film.

I haven’t really started to dive into the ESPN films yet but being a fan of Errol Morris, I really enjoyed this. The idea of “sports fandom” becoming so personal has always fascinated me.
