This special Hot Docs 2012 episode of The Documentary Blog Podcast is designed specifically for those of you who like listening to four guys talk about documentaries for nearly three hours. Other sites might consider breaking such a massive show into two parts, but we like to keep things LONG around these parts. On this episode, myself (Jay), Sean Dwyer (Film Junk), Frank Knezic (Film Junk), and Kurt Halfyard (Twitch, Row Three) blather on about 27 of the 198 films at this year’s festival. Even at nearly three hours, it feels like we barely scratched the surface.

Holy shit guys – 2 hours and 44 mins! Love the irony of you then saying “to cut back on time a little bit” at the start, too.
Keep up the awesome.
BONER! Gonna listen to this on the way to the hospital in the morning, it’s gonna be a sweet ride.
Great show guys,
Of the 24 films I caught at Hot Docs, 25 if you count that I watched The Imposter twice, only 8 of them overlapped with the ones discussed on the show. So you have given me several additional films (e.g. Chasing Ice, Love Story, Indie Game, Only the Young, etc) to keep an eye out for.
I will say that my views on Tchoupitoulas are very similar to Kurt’s. It took me a while to get past the obvious manipulation in the film. However, after 20 minutes or so, I eventually started to immerse myself into the world the directors were creating. I would have loved to hear the directors reasoning for some of the choices they made in the film, sadly the screening I was at only had the sound mixer in attendance.
I think one of the reasons The Imposter did not register in the audience voting is because it played earlier in the week. If you look at what ended up being in the top twenty, the majority of them screened mid-to later in the week. Having said that, The Imposter was the one film I heard discussed the most in lines during the festival. It is still my favourite films of the year so far.
As for Low and Clear, I thought it was beautifully shot but I wished the film had offered a little more insight into the guys’ personal life. One guy makes reference to his many responsibilities outside of fishing but we rarely get any footage of this.
Any word on when Detropia will get released? It is one of documentaries that I am really looking forward to. Unfortunately I could not fit it into my Hot Docs schedule.
Kurt is right on the money, The Ambassador is great.
Listening to this however really makes me want to see The Imposter. However, even though I’m an avid gamer I still don’t think Indie Game: The Movie sounds all that interesting. But I’ll probably check it out sooner or later if it screens at CPH:DOX this year. There’s a long time ’till November though…
