It’s been the week for exciting documentary news. First the Channel 4 BRITDOC Foundation announced an incredible partnership with Puma, and the creation of several new funds for filmmakers, then the Tribeca Film Institute announced the TFI Documentary Fund presented by HBO.
The Channel 4 BRITDOC Foundation and PUMA.Creative awards come in the form of the PUMA.Creative Catalyst Awards and the PUMA.Creative Impact Award. The Catalyst Awards consist of over 40 awards annually of up to 5,000 Euros each and ”will provide financial support, creative counsel and industry recognition to international documentary filmmakers whose creative storytelling highlights social justice, peace or environmental issues.” The fund is open to filmmakers of all nationalities and are awarded on a quarterly basis.
Meanwhile, the Creative Impact Award “is designed, each year, to honour the documentary film which has made the biggest difference in the world.” The prize for the Creative Impact Award is 50,000 Euros which goes to the filmmaker and to further the film’s outreach work.
More details and how to apply can be found here and there’s a swanky promo video for the partnership after the jump.
The TFI Documentary Fund comes in the form of over $100,000 towards fellowships and grants for engaging, character-driven documentaries. The recipients will also receive one-on-one meetings with executives from HBO’s Documentary team and ongoing guidance. This means that the Institute now awards more than $500,000 in filmmaker support grants a year, which is incredible.
The official breakdown:
Through the generous support of HBO, three fellowships will be awarded to films in the advanced stages of development, production or post-production: $50,000 will be awarded to an emerging filmmaker in production on his or her first feature-length documentary under The TFI/HBO “Documentary Screen Test” Fellowship; The TFI/HBO “House I Live In” Fellowship will award $25,000 towards the completion of a documentary focused on the filmmaker’s personal story; and a $25,000 TFI/HBO “Outside Looking In” Fellowship will be granted to support an extraordinary character-driven story, which aims to take audiences into someone else’s world.
Further details of the TFI Documentary Fund are here and details of all available funds from the Institute are here (submissions are now open so go apply!).
