The trailer for Brigitte Berman’s Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel (a Canadian production!) has hit the net. The film seems to focus on Hef’s advocacy of human rights and his role in the progression of free speech through his Playboy Magazine empire. It also looks to explore some of the contradictions Hugh faced between his career as a ‘pornographer’ — another point of discussion in the film, the art of Playboy Magazine — and his support of a number of feminist issues. It looks like an interesting biopic/historical social-political piece that boasts a pretty impressive list of A-List interview subjects: George Lucas, Gene Simmons, Jim Brown (A-list in my books), Bill Maher, James Caan, Mike Wallace, and Jesse Jackson among others.
Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel hits theatres July 30th (limited release).

This is one of my most anticipated films. I saw a TV program on Hugh Hefner once (it was one of those weird puff-pieces that run on TV that are really cheap to make, except this one actually had the main guy in it, as in Hugh Hefner did interviews for this thing) and that focused on alot of the same things as this movie seems to. While it does seem like a bit of a puff piece in some respects, I’ve pretty much decided that Hugh Hefner is a genuine guy and a good person, and I really can’t wait to see this movie.
