Today the recipients for this year’s Canwest-Hot Docs funding were announced and what makes this especially exciting is that the Documentary Blog’s own head honcho Jay Cheel’s first feature documentary Beauty Day was among those chosen.
For those that don’t know about the film yet the synopsis is below:
Before there was Tom Green…before there was Jackass…there was Ralph Zavadil.
His cable access television show, The Cap’n Video Show, ran from 1990 to 1995, spawning a small but loyal cult following. Each week, Ralph performed a series of idiotic and occasionally dangerous stunts, challenging the sensibilities of Southern Ontario audiences for five seasons. With the advent of the Internet and reality television only years away, his unique brand of gross-out stunt comedy was truly ahead of its time.
All it took was a broken neck for him to get noticed.
Huge congratulations to Jay from our tiny team at the Documentary Blog and you can follow the progress of the film at its official website and at facebook and twitter.

Congrats Jay. I can’t wait to watch it with my eyes.
Well done! Congrats to you, sir.
Congrats Jay. You deserve it man. You’ve got a great film on your hands I’m sure it will take you far.
Good luck.
Thanks guys!
Congratulations.. I can tell you work your ass off.
After analyzing all the footage shoots, compiling the Five-Alive drinkage rates, bison burger eat-age and general hospitality ratings of Villa Ralph, I think that Jay got off easy!!! LOLOL As you people know, Jay is a very talented and funny (droll comes to mind) person with a great friend in Roman.
They both wasted (took) their time to capture some footage with Me and Robert Buick to kind of put an exclamation point on the Cap’n Video Show.
Being a self taught videographer, I was impressed at the attention to detail that Jay Cheel took in regards to lighting, composition and angles. His questions were simple, yet very delving and he made me comfortable from the first day on. He even showed up at 1:34am to catch the birth of my puppies (well, not mine , my dawgs smartass!)
Roman Pizzacalla was a quiet organizer (producer) who made everything run smoothly among the chaos. His ideas led to many changes in the skits planned (much safer.lol) and since he had no idea what he was getting into (Roman had never heard of me before) I have to congratulate him on his courage.
In closing, I haven’t seen the film yet so I don’t know what sort of mess Jay has done to my life, but I am looking forward to nothing, for I live in the moment.
