  Sundance is now in full swing and there is so much snow! I'm managing to see the majority of films that I'd been hoping to, so will try and post reviews as and when I can (the wifi availability here is terrible). The first screening I got a chance to see was one of my most anticipated documentaries of the festival (and this year).   You'd be surprised how tough it is to come across a good WWII documentary. It seems to be a matter of quantity over quality, resulting in a blind-buy hit or miss scenario that unfortunately usually falls on the miss end of the spectrum. Having said that, every now and again a series will hit the target with a program that both informs and entertains. The History Channel's WWII in HD series does just that. The series presents recently uncovered colour footage of the war in 1080i high definition, combined with modern day interviews with war veterans as they tell their stories. ...

  Apparently four hours just weren't enough... Spike Lee is returning to New Orleans this month for a follow-up for his epic Hurricane Katrina documentary When The Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts. The sequel will air on HBO later this summer, sometime around the five year anniversary of the disaster (which will be on August 29th). The plan is for Lee to revisit some of the subjects who appeared in the first film, but also to expand beyond The Big Easy and look at the effects of Katrina along the Gulf Coast as well.   Last night the winners of AJ Schnack’s Cinema Eye Awards were announced and Louie Psihoyos’ The Cove took home three Cinema Eye Honors for Outstanding Nonfiction Feature, Outstanding Production and Outstanding Cinematography. As Jay mentioned when the nominees were announced, it's fantastic to see an award for cinematography in documentary and The Cove certainly deserved to receive the award. Other notable wins were Anders Østergaard’s Burma VJ and Donal Mosher’s October Country both receiving two awards and RJ Cutler’s The September Issue, which took the Audience Choice Prize.
