Maybe there's a way of creating a networking diagram that shows the direct and indirect influences of all the established documentary directors. We could start a version of "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon".

Or maybe not....

This post is QUITE the achievement, Jay! Going over your top 50 of the decade and then those of your contributors makes me realize just how many docs I watch and have watched in the past as I've seen pretty much all of 'em. I agree pretty much wholeheartedly with your choices, too. I feel that this decade has been, if not the best, then the most upwardly mobile in history. With the popularity and profitability of Michael Moore's films and to a lesser extent "reality TV" I think many people now see docs as being as "valid"(from a mainstream perspective) as fictional films. Again, great work, Jay, I look forward to you keeping me informed in 2010!

Hello friends, apart from GEOFFREY SMITH, you apparently dont get to watch Eastern European documentaries - this is where the originality in stories and storytelling is to be found. Take a look at my list on filmkommentaren.dk

Excellent idea. It's always cool to gain some insight into how filmmakers influence each other.

Impressive list of great filmmakers, but it's hard to really comment on their choices. I do like the American Movie choices.
