  As a full blown Blu Ray convert, it's great to see documentary releases hitting the shelves. Last year we got Encounters at the End of the World and Standard Operating Procedure, among others. This summer, Sony Pictures is giving Ari Folman's Waltz With Bashir the full HD treatment, and I think it will be worth every pixel. The tech specs are as follows: BD-50 dual-layer presentation with 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video (1.85:1) and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround tracks in Hebrew and English.   Now this is what I've been waiting for! High Definition fans have been singing their praises for The Criterion Collection's recent Blu Ray releases. As usual, the packaging and supplements have been top notch, and seeing some of these films in HD is a revelation. In an early press release last year, they'd listed a few non-fiction selections that were on the bill for the high definition treatment: Gimme Shelter, The Monterey Pop Festival and For All Mankind.   If any of you are familiar with McSweeny's Wholphin DVD series, you know that they contain some seriously crucial shit. You'll always find some interesting short docs, including a few previously unreleased films from such major league hitters as Spike Jonze, Errol Morris and David O. Russell. I own a few of these, but I've lost track of any recent releases.   In the past I've written about the challenges of reviewing documentaries and Generation RX is a prime example. It's tough to discuss a film that analyzes the use of mood altering drugs in children without turning your review into an opinion piece or a political editorial. The cinematic technique runs the risk of being completely ignored and overshadowed by the subject matter, which seems to result in critics giving a documentary a pass based off of the social relevance of its subject matter.   Find more videos like this on AdGabber That's cool. I'm not here to judge. We all know Morris has done tons of commercial work throughout his career, and some of them are pretty great. In fact, a lot of them are. After having just watched The Dark Wind for the first time, things could be A LOT worse. In conclusion, Errol Morris can do whatever Errol Morris has to do to make enough money to continue pumping out killer docs.
