I must say I’m much more pleased with this years non-fiction Oscar nominees than last years. Unfortunately, I still haven’t seen two of the five nominees (Trouble the Water and The Garden) but I’m pretty thrilled about the other three. I’m especially glad that Ellen Kuras’ Betrayal – Nerakhoon got a well deserved mention. Man on Wire seemed to be a shoe in, but Herzog’s Encounters at the End of the World is sort of a surprise. I can’t say it really makes up for the previous Grizzly Man snub though. What do you guys think of the results? Any glaring omissions? Young@Heart perhaps? How about predictions? I’ll go with Man on Wire. Here are the nominees:
The Betrayal – Nerakhoon
Encounters at the End of the World
The Garden
Man on Wire
Trouble the Water

Man on Wire for sure, but it is nice to see Herzog in the running. Those are the only two that I have seen so far, though.
A good list of documentaries. Thanks for posting.

I loved Man on Wire! It was a great documentary and the man who did it is incredible to listen to.
Does anyone else think Encounters lacked focus? I enjoyed it, but I thought it fell a little flat. Herzog got screwed with Grizzly Man, but I think it would be a shame if Encounters were to beat Man on Wire or Betrayal.
For the Academy to snub Religulous as a Documentary Nominee for 2009 is a travesty. Get your collective heads out of your collective asses and see what’s going on in the real world.
the cant allow things like religulous because it has to stay neutral. non political. you cant have stuff like that in the academy awards. just like they panned away from the dolphin text.
