The Beastie Boys Adam Yauch makes the plunge into the non-fiction feature film world with ‘Gunnin’ For That #1 Spot’. After successfully pulling off his elaborate 50 camera, fan filmed ‘Awesome: I Fuckin’ Shot That!’ concert film, Yauch decides to follow 8 high school basketball players as they attempt to go pro. The trailer is made up mostly of actual basketball footage, in which Yauck seems to take a hint from skateboarding videos, utilizing fisheye lenses and floating, off axis camera work. It seems as though all of that history with Spike Jonze has been an influence on Yauch’s shooting style. (Love the freeze frames!) The film will be faced with obvious Hoop Dreams comparisons, which could possibly hurt it. But I’m pretty curious to see Yauch’s take on high school basketball, and I’m hoping we get a good segment dedicated to the early days of Rucker Park in Harlem. Check out the trailer below and visit Gunnin’s offical website here.
