That’s right, it’s another give-away here at The Documentary Blog! Actually, I’d promised an immediate give-away after the King Corn contest, but I figured I’d hold off a bit to let the post-contest excitement sizzle for a while. This time, I’m giving away a brand new copy of Tricia Regan’s wonderful film, Autism: The Musical! Here’s the synopsis:
In 1980, autism was a relatively rare disorder, diagnosed in one of every 10,000 U.S. children. Today, according to the Centers for Disease Control, one in 150 may be afflicted. AUTISM: THE MUSICAL counters this troubling statistic with the story of five autistic children, their families and the dynamic woman who leads them to defy expectations by writing, rehearsing and performing their own musical. An intimate portrait of these young people and their families as they struggle, and ultimately triumph, through the transformative power of theatre.
I’ve seen the film and it’s great. Fans of Spellbound, Mad Hot Ballroom and Rock School will no doubt love this one. To win, simply email me and let me know who you played the best Phantom of the Opera; Colm Wilkinson, Michael Crawford or Paul Stanley. If you’re not sure, see the Paul Stanley video below for reference. If you simply can’t bring yourself to choose just one, simply send an email to jcheel@cogeco.ca with ‘Autism: The Musical’ in the subject line and you’re good to go. I’ll announce the winner sometime next week. Good luck!

People should really be educated about autism. I thought that it was just another illness that can be controlled, until I met two of my cousins last month. I really appreciate movies like this, gives credits to people who has to take care of children with autism. By the way I’m also looking forward to another teen documentary, American Teen.

If you haven’t seen Autism: The Musical yet, you should definitely check it out. It’s both informative and entertaining.
I’m also looking forward to American Teen.

Autism still affected the same number of people in 1980. Doctors have just become more educated about Autism and consequently the rate of diagnosis has increased.

Fridrik Thor Fridriksson oscar nominated director, Children of nature, is finishing a very interesting doc on the subject of autism called “Sunshine boy”. I saw a clip at a festival a few weeks back, looked really promising. You should keep an eye out when it is ready.
