Having never been in any real peril (not counting getting my wisdom teeth removed last month) I certainly love sitting back and losing myself in a great adventure film, and there’s definitely no shortage of documentaries that fit the bill. I was a big fan of Kevin MacDonald’s ‘Touching the Void’, so when I saw that ‘Deep Water’, IFC Film’s upcoming release from directors Louise Osmond and Jerry Rothwell is brought to us by the same producers, I was pretty excited. Here’s the synopsis:
The stunning true story of the first solo, non-stop, round-the-world boat race, and the psychological toll it took on its competitors. Sponsored by the Sunday Times of London, the much- ballyhooed event attracted a field of nine, including amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst, who set out to circumnavigate the globe in late 1968. Battling treacherous seas and his own demons, Crowhurst almost immediately comes apart as he faces the isolation of nine months on the high seas. Part adventure yarn and part metaphysical mystery, DEEP WATER is an unforgettable journey into one man’s heart of darkness.
I just checked out the trailer for this movie, and it looks to be right up my alley. A great mixture of modern day interviews and stock footage, the film looks as though it will do a great job recreating both the story and the period in which it took place. If it’s anywhere near as visceral an experience as Touching the Void was, this will make The Perfect Storm look like Singin’ in the Rain. Head on over to Apple and check out the trailer for yourself. Deep Water hits theatres (limited i’m sure) August 24th.
