‘Gimme Shelter’ is probably my favourite ‘rockumentary’ of all time, so when news of Martin Scorsese’s Rolling Stones films ‘Shine a Light’ surfaced, I was initially very excited. The idea of a Stone’s history lesson as told through Scorsese’s lens feels like the perfect match. (Probably due to his over-use of the song ‘Gimme Shelter’ in so many of his films.) I must admit I was a little disappointed upon hearing that this would actually be a modern day concert film, documenting a Stones performance in the style of Scorsese’s own ‘The Last Waltz’. Here’s my issue with this: Why would I want to watch the Rolling Stones of 2007 when I could watch a number of films featuring the far more relevant, energetic, influential Stones of the 60’s and 70’s? Well the trailer for Shine a Light has recently hit the net, and I gotta say it sort of caught my attention, simply because of the behind the scenes logistics of Scorsese trying to run his production smoothly. He’s has a great on screen presence, and I think I could watch him talk about ANYTHING for hours. As for the Stones themselves, I suppose they’re not entirely washed up, but rather a depressing reminder that EVERYBODY grows old, even young rock stars. Check out the trailer below.
