The trailer and website for director Seth Gordon’s ‘The King of Kong: A Fist Full of Quarters’ has just popped up online, and boy does it ever capture the essence of the 80′s. Or should I say it captures the essence of being TRAPPED in the 80′s. Such is seemingly the case of its main characters, Billy Mitchell and Steve Sanders, who digitally duke it out to see who’s the world’s greatest Donkey Kong player. The film found success at Sundance, scoring a distribution deal with Picturehouse, and has apparently provided the inspiration for an upcoming New Line fictional film based on the same events. And for what it’s worth, i’ve noticed Eli Roth has really been pushing this thing in his Hostel 2 promotional campaign. Personally, i’m a big fan of the tournament style docuentaries, so i’m hoping this won’t disappoint. And certainly an underdog story is always appealing. Check out the official King of Kong website here for more info on the film and a look at the trailer, or you can follow the link below and check it out over at /Film.

Saw the film at the Independent Film Festival of Boston, it was amazing! For a documentary on what might seem like trivial subject matter, the “characters” are interesting and there is great drama in the fight that unfolds on-screen for Donkey Kong supremacy… And if you grew up in the 80s blowing your money on videogames at the arcade you will love this film
Is there not another documentary about a guy trying to beat the “Asteroids” record, or something like this?
It ends with a shot of him on roller-skates at a disco, it played on CBC but I forget the title.
His machine keeps shorting out while he is trying to beat the record.
Anyone know this?
Saw the King Kong: A Fist Full…
It was VERY good. You could tell the audience had strong feelings about the characters, who were skillfully and distinctly painted as villains or saints. There was plenty of humor, which I thought at first would be mostly about how nerdy guys who still played Donkey Kong are. You figure out the more you watch that the laughs aren’t all cheap here. The story and emotional parts seemed organic enough. It’s a good movie, a good time.
i loveeeedd the moviee!! where can i buy it?!?!?! If anyone wants to do a low budget movie im ur gal Regina !!
I noticed your review of “The King of Kong”. We are distributing a very similar gaming documentary, “E-Athletes”, which releases on DVD, January 27th, 2009.
We would love to send you a screener for review.
Would you be of interest? If so, what would be the best address to send you a copy?
Thank you so much and look forward to hearing from you.
