If you haven’t heard of the Westborough Baptist Church by now, it’s only a matter of time. This group of religious fanatics, lead by certified asshole Fred Phelps, Sr., are best known for their radical protests and offensive tactics. With such slogans as ‘God Hates America’, ‘Pray for More Dead Soldiers’ and ‘God Killed Your Kids’, it’s no wonder this absurd family have recieved so much negative attention. The BBC’s Louis Theroux gives us an inside look at this fucked up bunch of god fearing folks otherwise known as ‘The Most Hated Family in America’. i watched this i am from the uk and i am gay the are not hated because of the homophobia but because they are calling soldiers fags when other people are homophobic just to gay men people say that it is there freedom of speech so that means they can say what they want like you homophobics say its there freedom of speech.

This “church” also protests at horse racing events; apparently the colorful silks jockeys wear on the track really make god mad.
Speaking of jockeys, I searched your fine site for the HBO documentary “Jockey” and didn’t see a mention. I’m a documentary freak, having seen countless films of this genre, and Jockey reveals the most shocking and shameful secrets of the glamorous horse-racing world.
If you’ve not yet seen Jockeys, it’s available now on HBO On Demand. Prior to this, I knew nothing of jockeys or horse racing. I was stunned by the pay received for the most dangerous sport in America, a sport that generates 1.2 billion US dollars per year, second only to football. Did you know that a jockey riding the Kentucky Derby receives a whopping $35 if they don’t win, show or place?
Even more shocking is the industry-required bulemia (eating, then purging) and other desperate measures to meet weight requirements originally created in the early 1800s. There is no doubt that the horses are treated infinitely better than the human in the saddle.
I am glad to hear that since the documentary’s release, some states are very slowly increasing the minimum required weight, but they likely won’t add more than 5 pounds. Some in the industry say increasing jockey weight puts the horse at risk. However, if the jockey hasn’t eaten in 3 days, is dizzy and weak from taking diuretics and sweating in the “hot box” to lose weight (or from not eating because they can’t afford it), isn’t that a much bigger risk to both the 1200-pound horse and the 112-pound rider?
Jockey is a documentary that should be seen not only by everyone who’s not a horse-race fan, but most importantly by those who are.

When i saw this documentary I was first angered but the disgusting beliefs of this inbred family! However, I began to realise what they believed made no logical sense, whatsoever. They think the Jews are “Fags” because they murdered Christ! Well, every educated person knows that this is totally wrong! Perhaps that old evil anti-Semitic, homophobic, racist nut bag should go back to high school and sit a GCSE in Religious Education! I pity the Phelps swarm more than feel anger as most of them have been manipulated into the beliefs of hate through emotional bullying. They are indeed, sick twisted and evil. When Louis interviewed the little boy who was made to picket, he didn’t understand the meaning of the words he was displaying on the placards.
I think the American government should stop them as their protests are anti-social and abusive. But Mr Bush would probably stand and protest with them again homophobia if he could! Its a sad shame that they deluded loons are allowed to behave in such a manner and preach hated in the name of god!

I think those people have completely lost it. They should be locked up in a loony bin !!! how can god hate people who follow his bible ? i dont believe in god myself but i dont think im going to hell, the only people who are going to hell is them ! weather your gay or a soldier , the soldiers are fighting for ther own country and gay can’t help ther feeling … if so god made them that way n thats how he wants them to be, the need to stop trying to read behind the lines n try to really understand what the bible is trying to tell them !!

This upsets me. How can a group of people so completely misenturpret the bible? They’re missing one of the biggest ideas in the bible; that jesus died for our sins.. We’re already forgiven. Yes, we are supposed to respect our forgivness and try our best to trust and follow him, but he left us with more than just rules.. He left us with hope.. Hope for all people. Some people will go to hell, and some will go to heaven. For a group of people to be so disgustingly disrespectful to an entire nation, the nation that provides them food, a home, a job for an income, a place for their children to learn how to read and write. The Abba Father is a God to be feared, but also a God that loves, accepts, and comforts. What kind of mother or father would put their children out on the streets to be yelled at and hit in the face with drinks. God’s wrath will come, but this family will have nothing to do with it. They are not helping God, they are turning them off to God. This family are the ones sending people to hell, and they will all rot in hell if they continue to spread hate, if they continue to turn people away from the Lord. God is capable of mighty, mighty things. This family says that funerals are a celebration of the dead and completely pointless. According to that statement, if one of their children died, they wouldn’t honor him/her? I am by no means free of sin. I by no means am sinning more or less than this family. All sins are equal in God’s eyes… The phelps family are a bunch of hypocrits. They all sin every day. Isaiah 40:1,2 - “Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has recieved from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins.”… May God bless the Phelps family, and lead them to the light. I will pray for them, I will pray for myself, and I will pray for the world.

Well it looks like this family are one of the few protesting against the American wars, they are oviously using gays and god to get noticed. People are very deluded for joining the army and killing innocent people and life on the planet and wasting tax payers money on war that could be spent on food and shelter for the poor.

I watched this and all i could think was wow, how are these people not locked up?! they go on about fags and they seem full of hate. Um, HELLO! wasn’t jesus all about forgiveness? and in the bible jesus even says stuff about not judging others. who the hell do they think they are?! the grandad is by all accounts insane but then again, they all worship him,give him there money and hang on his every word. pretty sweet his got it there. i think its good that the girls don’t want boyfriends because they want to stay “pure” or whatever. maybe this crazy cult will die out if they all stay “pure!” i hope so. they seem to think that anyone who isnt in there cult is going to hell. if thats the case they will be very lonely up there. to disrespect people who died in war regardless of weather you agree with the war or not is real evil. im only 20, i don’t know alot about life yet, but i know this is wrong and freedom of speech is being abused here. come on, some of the worlds finest actors, writers, singers, athletes and philosopers have been gay. its not something that people have a coice in. your born that way. god, or whatever, made you that way. so how is it sinfull? and hating jews?! jesus was jewish! they are gods people! it just goes to show how ignorant these people are.

I myself am a catholic. And I believe what these people are doing are completely wrong. in no possible way would god smile kindly on their souls. The signs are evil, praying for death? I don’t think God looks down upon the Gay’s as he created them as well. It’s just like racism at one point people believed Blacks were evil. These people are evil, they are persecuting Gay’s, and soldiers for their choices. God gave us freedom of choice, and for these people to be praying for death of those that have made those choices make me pray to God to have mercy on their Souls.

What ever happened to hate the sin, love the sinner?
I admire Mr. Theroux immensely for attempting to try and understand these people. His patience and tolerance with them was amazing and inspirational. I know that I could in no way demonstrate that type of compassion, what a shame his tolerance, respect and compassion for them was completely lost on them. Ironically, not knowing his religeous status he comes across as infinitely more “Christian” than anyone in the Phelps family. I agree, those people would picket Jesus Christ if he returned to earth.
Frankly, if I were him, after just a few days with those whack jobs, I would bring along a flamethrower and give some of the adults in the family a practical lesson in “Gods Wrath”.
How is it that they are not brought up on charges for abusing their children?

I’m sorry to say this but I can’t believe there are people out there that truly believe that there is “God”.There is no proof that “god”answers prayes or wants people to do his work. This family are fucking idiots,I just could’t believe how rude they are turning up to people’s funerals and saying those horrible things,when there are grieving peole. Why wouldn’t Americas government do somethin about it.I coudn’t understand why someone could hate there country so much.I just find it hard that what they think is right.BAD CALMER will defeat them. I thought there was only one god so who the fuck are they believing in.I’d love to meet them and show them what for! Yeah these particular kind of people need there heads read and locked up away from the pubic.And last of all how can they get away with the slander o princess Diana,how disgusting…
