girlsrock.jpgThere’s just something about watching kids learn to play rock music that’s really charming. I was a huge fan of Richard Linklater’s School of Rock, and I really enjoyed the documentary that followed, Rock School. Now comes ‘Girls Rock’, an idea that’s been done before, but will still entertain no doubt. The film is set at The Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls, a non-profit organization that ‘encourages the artistic and individual talents of girls and young women ages 8-18, and to empower them with tools for self-reliance as a means to enhance and affirm positive self-esteem.’ Here’s the synopsis:

‘Girls Rock focuses on Laura, an articulate Korean adoptee obsessed with death metal; Misty, who is emerging from a life of meth-addiction, homelessness and gang activity; Palace, a sweet-seeming 8-year-old with a heavy metal sneer, and Amelia, who’s writing a 14-song cycle about her dog Pippi. Forming bands, writing songs and playing a gig in one week, these girls and the rest of the camp engage in an experiment in empowerment that will leave no-one unchanged.’

Girls Rock is an official selection at this years Hot Docs film festival. I’ll be sure to try and check this one out. Have a look at the trailer below and check out the films official website here.

Hey, thanks for the shout out! Despite a slight wince about the “idea been done before” line (I’ll just quote our distributor who said he was acquiring the film not because it was about kids and rock, but because it was about girls’ lives), we’re grateful for all the other nice stuff you say!

Hot Docs-Saturday Night (April 21), 7pm, Bloor Theater. see ya there!

    Hey Arne,

I’m sure the film is about much more then kids playing rock music. I’m excited to see it, and hope to attend the Hot Docs screening. Thanks for visiting the site!
