Werner Herzog on Shooting in Antarctica: ‘It’s Easy’, Antarctica repsonds with the less clever ‘YOU’RE EASY!’

werner.gifThis week I had the pleasure of watching Werner Herzog’s ‘The Wild Blue Yonder’. (my review will be up this weekend) The film is great, and while going through some of the bonus features on the DVD, I heard Herzog mention he was shooting in Antarctica for his next film. From what I could tell, it looks like this next project is going to be another blend of science fiction and documentary. This reminded me of a story Sean pointed out to me a while back about Herzog’s wrap on that very same shoot he was referring to in the interview. According to Yahoo News, Herzog found the frozen tundra and chilling winds of Antarctica a breeze. “It’s easy. Antarctica is easy,” This coming from a 64 year old man who’s ventured into the deepest and darkest jungles and climbed the up the side of an active volcano. Of course it’s going to be easy! Although I can’t help but sense a slight exaggeration in Herzog’s tone, he does go on to describe how the baron land has changed since the days of the early explorers.

“It’s a perpetuated sort of image since the days of 1903 or 1910 or 1911, when Scott and Amundsen and Shackleton were out here…Now you have got a cafeteria, you have got the barber shop and the TV station. You’ve got the ATM machine, so what else can you ask for?”

Fair enough. It’s pretty great that a man of his age who’s settled down in Los Angeles hasn’t been spoiled the by modern comforts of the American way of life. There aren’t too many details on the film itself, other then the fact that the shoot was in co-operation with the National Science Foundation and will be airing on The Discover Channel. After some looking around on the NSF website, it looks like the title of the project is ‘ANTARCTICA: THE INNER LANDSCAPE’ Keep your eyes peeled for this one.
