Newmarket Films has just released a trailer for the acclaimed documentary God Grew Tired Of Us, which won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. The movie is an uplifting story about 3 boys who hiked barefoot across the sub-Saharan desert to escape the civil war in Sudan. They reached a UN refugee camp in Kenya and were relocated (along with 3800 others) to the United States where they were given three months to learn how to integrate into the Western world. Narrated by Nicole Kidman, the movie finds them struggling to cope with this strange and complicated modern environment, but ultimately succeed in making a new life for themselves.
The movie reminds me of the best parts of The Year of the Yao (ie. the culture clash) offering an outsider’s look at our own world, along with a glimpse into their previous lives. I could have done without the U2 music in the trailer (I’m assuming that was U2?), but otherwise it looks pretty interesting. I mean, these are guys who have never experienced electricity before! Director Christopher Quinn also directed 21 Up America (from the American version of The Up Series). Watch the trailer for God Grew Tired of Us now at the official site (linked below).
