The Documentary Films of Todd Phillips

owen_wilson12.jpgWith the DVD age in full effect, (or coming to an end depending on whether or not you’re a supporter of any of the new HD formats) it’s tough to think of any films or tv shows that haven’t already recieved the digital treatment. Even some of the most obscure childhood favourites have found their way onto DVD, remastered and repackaged. I was trying to think of some things that have yet to make the digital jump…first thing that comes to mind is the 1966 Batman tv show, currently held up due to rights issues. Then of course there’s Fred Dekker’s Night of the Creeps, the classic 80′s horror film that directly inspired James Gunn’s Slither. But more appropriate to this blog, there’s the early films of Todd Phillips. Best known for his Frat Pack comedies (Old School, Starsky and Hutch, Road Trip), Phillips originally got his start in documentary filmmaking. (and also a quick stint as a cab driver on HBO’s Taxi Cab Confessions) There’s two films of his that i’ve been dying to see: The first is Frat House. The film looks at the insane hazing process made popular by traditional fraternities throughout the United States. From what I understand, the film was either picked up or funded by HBO and then subsequently shelved for some reason. The second film is Hated, a documentary about the Murder Junkies infamous lead singer, G.G. Allin. I’m in no way a fan of G.G.’s, but I recently came across some clips of this film on YouTube, and i’m now dying to see it. Luckily, it seems as though Hated is actually available on DVD, so stay tuned to The Documentary Blog for my review. As far as Frat House, if anyone has any scoops on where I can get a copy of this film, please let me know!
