As you may know, The Documentary Blog is a fairly new site. With some help from Sean, my inter-web cohort and podcast partner at FilmJunk, I’m trying my best to keep the content coming. However, with such a focused topic, sometimes it’s hard to maintain a steady flow of news stories. As of late i’ve been trying to post more videos and trailers when I can, and staying on top of reviews of cool films i’ve been checking out lately. I just though maybe it’d be a good idea to ask you guys what YOU would like to see here at The Documentary Blog. More podcasts? Editorials? More reviews? Audio Reviews? Video? Whatever it is, let us know. I think I might throw up a suggestion post every few months or so, just to keep the site focused on what YOU want to see. It may be a little early in the game at this point, so i’m not expecting tons of suggestions, but i’d like to see this site grow into one of the internet’s top sources for documentary news and reviews. So drop us a line if you’ve got any suggestions. You can leave a comment or just email me at jcheel@sympatico.ca. Thanks!

I love what you’re doing on this site. I’d like to hear or see more interviews with documentary directors wheater you do the interviews or find it on Youtube. Get some directors or producers to submit a blog topic so we can interact with them. Would love a review on Greensboro’s Child.
Keep up the great work. I know how consuming keeping up a detailed blog can be. I’m currently maintaining 4 blogs… corporate, fun, professional, and film. I will be watching.
Podcasts are the shit. Wether it’s audio or video, when you hear people talk about something that they love it is always a great time. Written reviews are good and I enjoy reading them, but they *do* seem a little 2003, don’t they?
I haven’t been too upset with a lack of news, I think the posting for the most part has been steady enough to keep everybody’s interest. And you should definitely siphon the material you post about. I’d much rather have 3 personalized posts a week on movies that the poster care about, than 6 posts that could have been written by a robot.
If the quality is kept at this current level, I’d take more of anything. When you say editorials do you mean things like the “5 essential documentaries” feature? Because that was great, but if you mean longer posts on the current state of studio’s not wanting to finance documentaries or other things of the sort… Boring.
Keep it focused on the movies, and do whatever makes you feel warm inside. Having a great time so far.
Thanks guys.
As for the editorials, it would be more along the lines of the top five lists and more personal thoughts on things. Maybe some features on different documentary styles, different filmmakers and so on.
As for the podcast, we’ll hopefully have some more soon. I’m hoping to do one for the Jonestown documentary.
And Andy, I will check out Greensboro’s Child.
Thanks,
Jay C.
interviews would be key for this sorta blog, as I imagine getting these people would be easier than other persons. something like Joe Berlinger/Bruce Sinofsky would be awesome.
Don’t stop this blog! Documentary champions, professional or not, need your timely work. Your posts are very apt and the invested effort is apparent. An idea to consider: a vlog series on what it’s like getting a documentary off the ground. I personally use my blog as a progress tracker as my film unfolds (livingwithgeeks.blogspot.com). Since I’m wearing all hats in the process, it helps seeing others too as they grow their projects from soup to nuts. Thx again for your info. –Jill F.
Here’s a question:
I was going to do a post here and there about my own documentary, ‘Obsessed & Scientific’. The process of shooting the student film short, and the ongoing process of putting together a feature version fo the film. Not sure how interesting it would be for those readers that don’t know about the project, but i figure it could be a good fall back when news is sparse.
Yes – do it. It’s understandable wanting to offer content with the greatest common appeal. Yet posting on documentary production is an apt concept for this blog. Your experience as a filmmaker – student level or not – has weight in the blogosphere. That’s what makes a blog effective — democratizing voice & lessons learned. “Obsessed & Scientific” can only benefit by sharing about its production & conversion to feature length, esp if you invite feedback from readership.
I don’t know about how the blogosphere works and what it needs, but I would read stuff about your movie… Even though I still haven’t fucking seen it… Oh well, you get what you pay for I guess?
First of all, I really like this blog.
Second, i agree strongly with Andy Coon on
Thirdly, i would like to see more reviews of independent/amature documentaries. And i know its hard work to spend hours looking through 10os of junks, just to fine 1 decent one to blog about.
thank you
I’d like to another podcast with doug, or even reed f.
