  No stranger to documentary film, Spike Lee has spent the last year filming When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts. Lee's latest documentary began as a 2-hour film with a budget of $1 million but quickly doubled with the backing of HBO. The now 4-hour documentary is set to debut on HBO later this month.   If only heroes could learn to tell thier stories without so much damned swearing. It would be easier on all of us. Especially CBS, who plan to run an updated version of the Gedeon brothers powerfully visceral documentary film '9/11' (see my review here). Not unlike Ken Burn's War documentary series, '9/11's large amount of strong language could find CBS running into huge amounts of fines if aired uncensored. As it stands, CBS has decided the film is NOT indecent, and will run it with dirty words intact, prompting the viewers before and after commercial breaks with the message 'if ...

  Anyone who saw the 2003 movie American Splendor will probably remember one notable character almost as much as they remember underground comic pioneer Harvey Pekar himself: Toby Radloff. Radloff is a friend of Pekar's who appeared in his comic book and eventually went on to appear in a series of MTV segments throughout the 80's.   Here's the lowdown on street dates for a few higher profile documentaries that I'm looking forward to seeing this fall when they finally get released on DVD: Sketches of Frank Gehry - Aug. 22nd First feature length documentary from Sydney Pollack (Tootsie, The Interpreter) about a quirky world famous architect.   Some would say that this has been a pretty disappointing year for movies. Most of the big summer blockbusters have come and gone and didn’t live up to the hype. Aside from a few expected hits, theatres just aren’t drawing the numbers the studios expected.   I'm not a huge sports fan, but for some reason I really like sports films. All of those 'based on a true story' feel good movies that see the underdogs rising up to the occasion and beating the odds, or in the case of Friday Night Lights, LOSING HARD.
