Nirvana Biographer Reveals Details On Upcoming Cobain Documentary

Kurt-Cobain-Springfield-1.jpgThe wonderfully well dressed folks at Pitchfork Media have reported on an interview over at mtv.com with ex-Rolling Stone journalist and Kurt Cobain biographer Michael Azerrad regarding the upcoming documentary ‘Kurt Cobain: About A Son’. As you may have heard, director A.J. Schnack worked together with Azerrad, digging through hours and hours of recorded audio interviews Azerrad conducted with Cobain while researching his book ‘Come As You Are’.

“Courtney [Love] greeted me at the front door of their apartment, and we walked down this long hallway, with a bedroom down at the end. And I was just dreading what I was going to find in that bedroom. But what I found was a man lying in bed, with his feet pointed towards the door. His feet were sticking out from underneath a blanket, and his toenails were painted red. He was extremely nice, told me to come in and sit down. And then he offered me some grapes.”

I just love the idea of using these audio recordings as a narration throughout the film. One thing i’m really curious about is whether or not Schnack has secured the rights to use Nirvana’s music. Previously, Nick Broomfield’s documentary ‘Kurt and Courtney‘ was denied permission by Courtney Love herself, and I personally thought it was a pretty big blow to the end product. However, now that Courtney has sold the rights to most, if not all of the Nirvana catalogue, (Which explains the recent performances of Nirvana songs on my new favourite show Rockstar: Supernova) I’m curious whether or not About a Son will actually be the SECOND movie (next to Jarhead) to feature Nirvana’s music. On that note, it was also revealed that Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and producer Steve Fisk will be providing the instrumental soundtrack for the film, along side of some songs from many of Cobain’s reportedly most influential bands.
