I’m hardly a religious person. In fact, i know very little about religion in general. I’ve actually been known to confuse events in the Bible with events in The Three Amigo’s. (BURNING bush, not SINGING bush!) Well there’s no doubt that there’s been some great documentaries that deal with religion in one way or another. (One of my personal favourites is George Ratliff’s Hell House.) The fine folks at Cinematical have reported on a new film called ‘Jesus Camp’, which was recently screened at the Tribeca Film Festival. Here’s the synopsis:
The makers of Boys of Baraka turn their cameras on an evangelical Christian camp of rare devotion. With unprecedented access, the children and parents show how their faith dictates everything from their daily lives to politics. This fascinating doc about a rarely seen world where faith trumps everything else is sure to provoke debate.
What little info i’ve found on the film sounds great. There doesn’t seem to be a trailer around, but the synopsis is pretty interesting. The film was recently suppose to be shown at Michael Moore’s 2nd annual Traverse City Film Festival, but Magnolia Pictures has decided to pull Jesus Camp due to fear of possibly alienating a segment of their audience by being associated with Moore. According to Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles, the fact that Moore is such a “polarizing figure” could taint the films completely unbiased portrayal of the evangelical summer camp. I tend to agree. Do you remember his Oscar win for Bowling For Columbine? That’s right…the time when he asked the other nominated filmmakers to join him onstage during his outburst against Bush. This was proof enough that he has no problem associating himself with other filmmakers that might not totally agree with his views. Either way, I now have another must see film to add to my ever growing list.

I found a clip from the movie on YouTube:

Looks like the clip has been removed by Magnolia Pictures. I guess they’re concerned that their film will be associated with the fat kid singing Gnarles Barkely’s ‘Crazy’.
