Well it’s been a good while now since that infamous superbowl half time show, and we’re STILL feeling the wrath of Janet Jackson’s boob. More specifically, documentary filmmaker Ken Burns is feeling that wrath. His next project, ‘The War’, is under pressure from the The Federal Communications Commission for some dirty, dirty language spewn from the mouths of…WWII WAR VETERANS! Yes, that’s right, America’s beloved heroes and defenders of freedom could be silenced because of some salty language. Thanks to a new law signed by everybody’s favourite Bush (no, not Barbera), PBS could face fines upwards of $325,000 if the seven part series airs ‘swears intact’. Now although PBS president and CEO Paula Kerger claims that this is in no way connected to Janet and Justin’s earth shattering half-time performance, you can’t help but think that post Superbowl whatever-number-it-was paranoia has played a role. In regards to the film, the alternative is to bleep out the unmentionables, but Kerger says that would ‘diminish the impact of the film’. Another option would be to air the special after 10pm complying with the rules and regulations. Kerger is also reluctant about this, worrying that it would decrease the number of viewers. I think this is pretty ridiculous. These men have amazing stories to share, and the fact that the exact freedoms they stood for will stop them from doing it is pretty ironic and sad. Let these men tell their stories the way they wish, swearing and all. Afterall, we all know that stories are way better when told with colourful language…Richard Pryor is proof of that.
