On his 2005 album Late Registration, Kanye West wrote a song called “Diamonds From Sierra Leone”, about the civil war in West Africa and the conflict over the Sierra Leone diamond mines. Now he will appear in a documentary alongside Jadakiss, Paul Wall, Raekwon and Tego Calderón in an attempt to educate people about the situation and how it affects the sale of jewelry in the rest of the world — especially to hip hop musicians and fans. Bling: A Planet Rock is directed by hip hop journalist Raquel Cepeda, former editor of One World magazine. “The film is not intended to make people stop wearing diamonds, because if we boycotted them, it would impair the fragile economy of Sierra Leone and would end up hurting these people… We wanted to raise awareness about the whole issue. We wanted people to bling responsibly.” The movie is currently in production and will hit the festival circuit this winter. In the meantime, for more information on this issue you can watch a short documentary online called Bling: Consequences and Repercussions, directed by Kareem Edouard and narrated by Chuck D.
