Last month I posted on Film Junk about an upcoming IFC documentary called Rank. Although the subject of bull riding is not something I would necessarily be interested in, it is directed by John Hyams who previously did the film The Smashing Machine about UFC fighter Mark Kerr. The Smashing Machine may have been among the most powerful documentaries I have ever seen, and now Hyams is focusing on another equally macho and physically devastating sport. The trailer has finally gone online over at the movie’s official website and I think it looks fantastic. In addition to the action, there are scenes of bull riders in hospital beds speaking about why they put their lives on the line and what it might cost them. Both emotional and gritty, this is a movie that pierces into the mind of fierce competitors who pit themselves man against beast. Great stuff. I’m not sure when (or if) this movie will hit theatres, but the official site says it will air on IFC on October 5th.
