Just over a year ago, artists Christo and Jean Claude raised 7,500 sixteen foot tall gates, each adorned with saffron coloured fabric, throughout New York City’s Central Park. Like all of Christo’s work, the Gates were a temporary display, standing for only sixteen days. Amazingly though, the process of bringing this project to life lasted over twenty years. “The Gates” is the sixth collaboration between Christo and legendary documentary filmmakers Albert and David Maysles. If you haven’t seen any of their other five ‘Christo and Jean Claude’ films, I highly recommend them. Especially ‘Umbrella’s‘, which has some pretty dramatic twists and turns. I just checked out the five minute trailer for ‘The Gates’, and it looks like equally as interesting as the other five films. Alot has changed in the twenty years since Christo first pitched his idea to the city of New York. Including, unfortunately, the death of one of the projects main contributors, David Maysles. This trailer shows us not only how the city of New York has changed, but how the same people who disregarded Christo’s work as throw away ‘art’ so many years ago have opened their minds to an event that probably holds much more significance now since the events of…well, 9/11 of course! Check out the five minute trailer for “The Gates” here. For those interested in the other five Christo films, they’re currently available on DVD from Plexifilm.
